Specimen Required:
Tube: 2 mL EDTA lavender-top tube properly filled with 2 mL of blood (1.6 mL of blood is minimum for acceptable sample).
Microtainer: 500 uL is proper fill. Minimum acceptable will be 250 uL (microtainer has lines to indicate the 250 and 500 uL volumes).
Two (2) slides should accompany samples from off-campus sites. They must be labeled with two identifiers, e.g., name, MRN, DOB, etc.
Special notes:
Preferred specimen is a 2 mL EDTA lavender-top tube.
One EDTA lavender-top microtainer is acceptable for newborns, small infants, and difficult draws.

None.

SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Specimen Processing Instructions:
Do not centrifuge specimen. Blood smears kept at room temperature. 
Transport temperature:
Refrigerated (preferred) or room temperature.
Specimen stability:
Refrigerated sample is stable for 72 hours; room temperature, 36 hours.
Rejection criteria:
Clotted, frozen, underfilled, overfilled, hemolyzed, or centrifuged specimens. Specimens beyond stability limits.
