Acceptable specimens are serum from plain red-top (nonserum separator) tube or plasma from sodium or lithium heparin tube. EDTA plasma is not acceptable.
What to submit:
1 mL aliquot of serum; minimum 0.5 mL.

None.
 
Specimen Processing Instructions:
Centrifuge and transfer serum or plasma specimens to clean, plastic, screw-capped vial(s). Transport on refrigerant coolant. Sample is acceptable up to 3 freeze/thaw cycles.
Transport temperature:
Refrigerated for frozen. Transport on refrigerant coolant. Sample is acceptable up to 3 freeze/thaw cycles.
Specimen stability:
Room Temperature: 3 days. Refrigerated: 27 days. Frozen: 4 weeks (-20°C)
Rejection criteria:
EDTA plasma is not acceptable.

Altitude-Related Reference Ranges for Soluble Transferrin Receptor, Serum
African American 10.6-29.9 mmol living at low altitude, 12.5-31.8 mmol living at high altitude. Non-African American 8.8-28.1 mmol living at low altitude, 10.7-30 living at high altitude
Clinical cutoff values (2)
Iron deficiency anemia - Greater than ULRR (even during acute response to infection/inflammation).
Hyperplastic Erythropoiesis: Greater than ULRR
Ineffective Erythropoiesis: Grater than ULRR (e.g. thalassemia, megaloblastic or sideroblastic anemia)
Effective increased: Greater than ULRR.
Erythropoiesis (e.g., hemolytic anemia with an elevated reticulocyte count; recent blood donation; recent blood loss; last trimester of pregnancy) ULRR=Upper Limit of Reference Range for specific population (e.g., 29.9 nmol/L for African-Americans living <1000 feet above sea level).
