Ancillary Testing
Ancillary, or point-of-care, testing at GML is unique because it is not performed in a centralized location. For most laboratory tests, a blood or other body fluid specimen is collected from a patient and sent to the laboratory for testing. With point-of-care testing, doctors or nursing staff, under the direction of the Ancillary Testing Department, perform testing at the patient's side. The Ancillary Testing Department verifies that the testing personnel follow proper procedures and practices to ensure that point-of-care patient testing is accurate. Because these results are usually obtained in two minutes or less, patients are able to receive more timely and appropriate medical treatment.
