Laboratory Information Systems at Geisinger Medical Laboratories
TThe Geisinger Laboratory is managed by three (3) primary information systems. The general Clinical Lab System, which includes Microbiology, Blood Bank and a Clinical Financial System® utilizes the Sunquest Laboratory System® software, running under Digital UNIX®, in an A/B Link configuration. In addition, the Laboratory utilizes Cerner/DHT's CoPathPlus® Client Server system for Anatomic Pathology and the CareEvolve (GMLLink) System for Internet access to lab orders and results. This web-based system is directly interfaced to several Geisinger systems
Also in use are several smaller systems, such as, TubeTracker® for tracking specimen tubes post analysis, the REES® Temperature Monitoring System to record and monitor the temperature of critical storage devices, and LabScheduler®, a computerized system for scheduling Lab employees.
The Laboratory takes advantage of all the advanced features of these systems including, but not limited to, bar-coded sample and patient identification, bi-directional instrument interfacing distributed patient report printing and rules processing and internet based access. The Laboratory’s systems are interfaced to our SMS Envision System®, IDX® and EPIC® systems via an interface engine (eGate®) for inpatient admissions, discharges, and transfers (ADT) and outpatient registration and all billing functions. An order entry and results-reporting interface is currently available to our EPIC® clinical repository and our web-based Laboratory System.
These systems allow us to develop partnerships with other organizations and support substantial enhancements in overall productivity. In addition, they allow us to create effective and seamless integration among separate facilities and interface with existing and future Geisinger corporate and clinical information systems.
Technical support is provided by an IT / LIS support team. Day-to-day operations and system management are being handled directly by the laboratory by LIS Technologists and several lab system subject matter experts.
