SPECIMEN COLLECTION
Specimen type: 

Serum (preferred) or plasma


Preferred collection container: 
Alternate collection container: 
6 mL dark blue-top (K2 EDTA) tube
3 mL lavender-top (K2 EDTA) tube
4 mL green/green-top (sodium heparin) tube
Specimen required: 

1 mL aliquot of serum or plasma; minimum 0.5 mL. Please submit a separate frozen aliquot for this test. It may not be combined with any other test requiring a frozen aliquot.


Special notes: 

Early morning specimen preferred. Serum separator tubes are not acceptable. Do not submit in glass tubes.



SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Processing instructions: 

Serum: Allow to clot. Serum or plasma: Centrifuge 10 minutes at 3000 rpm.


Transport temperature: 

Frozen.


Specimen stability: 

Room temperature: 3 days. Refrigerated: 14 days. Frozen: 1 year.


Rejection criteria: 

Early morning specimen preferred. Serum separator tubes not acceptable. Do not submit in glass tubes.

Clinical significance: 

11-Deoxycortisol (Compound S) is useful in diagnosing patients with 11-beta-hydroxylase deficiency (second leading cause of congenital adrenal hyperplasia) and primary (adrenal failure) or secondary (hypothalamic-pituitary ACTH deficiency) adrenal insufficiency.
