SPECIMEN COLLECTION
Specimen type: 

Plasma or serum


Specimen required: 

2 mL of serum or plasma; minimum 0.5 mL


Special notes: 

Outreach clients: Specimen may also be collected in grey-top tubes. Place specimen on ice, or centrifuge and separate plasma from cells.


Patient preparation: 

Fasting specimen is not required. For fasting glucose, please order Fasting Plasma Glucose (GLUFP).



SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Processing instructions: 

Allow serum to clot. Centrifuge to separate serum or plasma within 2 hours of collection.


Transport temperature: 

Refrigerated (preferred) or room temperature.


Specimen stability: 

Spun SST: Room temperature 8 hours; refrigerated 3 days. 
Spun PST: Room temperature 4 hours; refrigerated 8 hours. 
Grey-top: 3 days (spun and unspun).


Rejection criteria: 

For specimens collected in anything other than grey-top tubes, specimen is not acceptable for glucose testing if not centrifuged within 2 hours of collection.

Reference interval: 

0-31 days: 45-90 mg/dL 
>= 32 days: 70-120 mg/dL

Clinical significance: 

Glucose levels are used in the diagnosis and treatment of carbohydrate metabolic disorders including diabetes mellitus, idiopathic hypoglycemia, and pancreatic islet cell neoplasm.
