SPECIMEN COLLECTION
Specimen type: 

24-hour urine


Preferred collection container: 
Specimen required: 

5 mL aliquot of urine; minimum 1 mL.


Special notes: 

Urine with preservatives is not acceptable. Mix well. Estimate total collection volume from 24-hour urine container. Remove required aliquot. Record total volume on both aliquot tube and request slip (if applicable).

Refrigerated.


Specimen stability: 

Room temperature/refrigerated: 14 days.


Rejection criteria: 

Urine containing preservatives is not acceptable.

Clinical significance: 

Urinary excretion of potassium is increased in primary aldosteronism. It is often increased in dehydration and in salicylate toxicity. Decreased levels are seen in malabsorption.
