SPECIMEN COLLECTION
Specimen type: 

Serum (preferred) or plasma.


Preferred collection container: 
Alternate collection container: 
3 mL green/black top lithium heparin tube
3 mL lavender-top (K2 EDTA) tube
4 mL green/green-top (sodium heparin) tube
Specimen required: 

3 mL aliquot of serum or plasma; minimum 1.5 mL.


Special notes: 

Do not use serum separator/gel barrier tubes.


Patient preparation: 

If medication is taken at bedtime, draw blood 10-12 hours later. For a more frequent dosage schedule, draw blood just before receiving medication.



SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Processing instructions: 

Serum: Allow to clot. Centrifuge 10 minutes at 3000 rpm. Plasma: Centrifuge 10 minutes at 3000 rpm.


Transport temperature: 

Refrigerated.


Specimen stability: 

Room Temperature: 5 days. Refrigerated: 7 days. Frozen: 1 month.


Rejection criteria: 

Gross hemolysis. Specimen collected in gel barrier tubes. Stability limits exceeded.
