SPECIMEN COLLECTION
Specimen type: 

Stool


Preferred collection container: 
Specimen required: 

1 g random formed stool; minimum 0.3 gm.


Special notes: 

Undiluted feces in clean, dry container. Submit several grams undiluted in a sterile, plastic, leakproof container. Do not add fixative or preservative.


Patient preparation: 

It is recommended to interrupt an enzyme substitution therapy for 72 hours in order to avoid possibility of a cross-reaction with porcine proteins.



SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Transport temperature: 

Frozen (preferred). Refrigerated also acceptable.


Specimen stability: 

Room Temperature: Unacceptable. Refrigerated: 7 days. Frozen: 28 days.


Rejection criteria: 

Stability limits exceeded. Specimen with fixative or preservative added.

Clinical significance: 

The Elastase-1 is a quantitative enzyme linked immunosorbent assay for measuring concentrations of elastase-1 in feces as an aid in diagnosis of the exocrine pancreatic function.
