SPECIMEN COLLECTION
Specimen type: 

24-hour urine


Preferred collection container: 
Alternate collection container: 
24-hour urine collection preserved with 5 g Na2CO3
Specimen required: 

2 mL aliquot of 24-hour urine collection; minimum 1 mL, protected from light.


Special notes: 

Refrigerate during collection and protect from light. Mix well. Estimate total collection volume from 24-hour urine container. Remove required aliquot. Record total volume on both aliquot tube and request slip (if applicable). Wrap tube in aluminum foil or use amber tube to protect from light.



SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Transport temperature: 

Refrigerate during and after collection. Protect from light.


Specimen stability: 

Room Temperature: Unacceptable. Frozen: 1 month, pH 6-7. Refrigerated: 1week, pH 6-7.


Rejection criteria: 

Room temperature specimens unacceptable. Acidified specimens unacceptable.

Additional information: 

*Patients with hereditary forms of porphyria usually will present with profound elevations of this analyte (>5-fold) during acute episodes. Moderate elevations (<3-fold) are more often due to medications or environmental factors.
