SPECIMEN COLLECTION
Specimen type: 

Plasma or Serum


Specimen required: 

2 mL of serum or plasma; minimum 0.2 mL.


Patient preparation: 

Fasting specimen preferred.



SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Processing instructions: 

Allow serum to clot. Centrifuge to separate serum or plasma within 2 hours of collection.


Transport temperature: 

Refrigerated (preferred). Room temperature or frozen specimen also acceptable.


Specimen stability: 

Room temperature: 4 days. Refrigerated: 8 days. Frozen: 8 days.


Rejection criteria: 

Stability limits exceeded.

Reference interval: 

90-180 mg/dL.

Decreased C3 may be associated with acute glomerulonephritis, membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis, immune complex disease, active systemic lupus erythematosus, and generalized autoimmune processes.
