SPECIMEN COLLECTION
Specimen type: 

Whole blood


Preferred collection container: 
Alternate collection container: 
3 mL green/black top lithium heparin tube
Lithium heparin (no gel) microtainer
Specimen required: 

1mL whole blood, minimum 0.4mL


Special notes: 

Due to sample instability, this test may only be collected and analyzed at performing sites (see below).



SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Processing instructions: 

Transport immediately to the Chemistry Stat Lab; specimen must be analyzed immediately.


Transport temperature: 

Room temperature (preferred). Transport immediately. If delay in transport is anticipated, place specimen in an ice slurry.


Specimen stability: 

Stable room 30 minutes at room temperature, 1 hour on ice.


Rejection criteria: 

Stability limits exceeded.



TEST DETAILS
Reference interval: 

0-31 days: 45-90 mg/dL 
>= 32 days: 70 - 120 mg/dL.


Critical values/courtesy alerts: 
Below 45 mg/dL; above 500 mg/dL.
