SPECIMEN COLLECTION
Specimen type: 

24-hour urine


Preferred collection container: 
Specimen required: 

5 mL aliquot of 24-hour urine, as above; minimum 2 mL.


Special notes: 

Keep refrigerated during collection. Collect without preservative. Mix well. Estimate total collection volume from 24-hour urine container. Remove required aliquot. Record total volume on both aliquot tube and request slip (if applicable). Also record patient's age and sex on both aliquot tube and request slip (if applicable).

Transport temperature: 

Refrigerated (preferred).


Specimen stability: 

Room Temperature: 72 hours. Refrigerated: 5 days. Frozen: 30 days.


Rejection criteria: 

Stability limits exceeded, acidified specimens.

Clinical significance: 

NTx is useful to assess bone resorption in patients with metabolic bone disease and monitor therapy to slow or halt osteoporotic bone loss. A decline of 30% or more of NTx over a six-month period suggests effective therapy.
