Specimen type: 

Random urine


Preferred collection container: 
Specimen required: 

5 mL aliquot urine; minimum 2 mL. Protect aliquot from light.


Special notes: 

Collect without preservative. Refrigerate collection. Wrap specimen in aluminum foil to protect from light.



SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Processing instructions: 

Protect specimen from light.


Transport temperature: 

Refrigerated.


Specimen stability: 

Room Temperature: Unacceptable. Refrigerated: 7 days. Frozen: 30 days.


Rejection criteria: 

Samples received at room temperature; samples not protected from light; samples with a pH less than 4 are unacceptable.

Clinical significance: 

Porphyria is a group of distinct disorders, characterized by the abnormal accumulation of porphyrins or porphyrin precursors. Porphyrin fractionation of urine is useful in diagnosing porphyrin cutanea tarda, hereditary coproporphyria, and variegate porphyria.
