SPECIMEN COLLECTION
Specimen type: 

24-hour urine


Preferred collection container: 
Specimen required: 

1.8 mL aliquot of 24-hour urine (minimum 0.6 mL) collected in 24-hour urine container.


Special notes: 

Mix well. Estimate total collection volume from 24-hour urine container. Remove required aliquot. Record total volume on both aliquot tube and request slip (if applicable). Also note if patient is on penicillamine therapy. Patient's age is required for correct reference range. Do not use container with preservatives.



SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Transport temperature: 

Frozen.


Specimen stability: 

Room Temperature: Unacceptable. Refrigerated: Unacceptable. Frozen: 2 months.


Rejection criteria: 

Urine with a pH less than 2 will be rejected. Specimen not shipped frozen.
