The VDRL test is a nontreponemal (lipoidal antigen) test that can be used to aid in the diagnosis of neurosyphilisusing CSF. The diagnosis of neurosyphilis involves a combination of laboratory testing (e.g., CSF cell count, protein, or CSF-VDRL) in the presence of reactive serologic test [nontreponemal (lipoidal antigen) andtreponemal] results and neurologic signs and symptoms. Positive VDRL-CSF results (in the absence of bloodcontamination) are suggestive of neurosyphilis in a person with the appropriate signs and symptoms.
