Plasma or serum


Specimen required: 

2 mL of serum or plasma; minimum 0.2 mL.


Patient preparation: 

Fasting specimen preferred



SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Processing instructions: 

Allow serum to clot. Centrifuge to separate serum or plasma within 2 hours of collection.


Transport temperature: 

Refrigerated (Preferred) or frozen


Specimen stability: 

Refrigerated: 7 days. Frozen: 1 month.

Clinical significance: 

HDL is inversely related to the risk for cardiovascular disease. It increases following regular exercise, moderate alcohol consumption, and with oral esterogen therapy. Decreased levels are associated with obesity, stress, cigarette smoking and diabetes mellitus.
