SPECIMEN COLLECTION
Specimen type: 

Random urine


Preferred collection container: 
Specimen required: 

2 mL aliquot random urine; minimum 1 mL. Protect aliquot from light.


Special notes: 

Protect from light. Collect after first morning void and before early evening.


Patient preparation: 

Collect after first morning void and before early evening.



SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Transport temperature: 

Refrigerated (preferred) or frozen.


Specimen stability: 

Room Temperature: Unacceptable. Refrigerated: 1week, pH6-7. Frozen: 1 month, pH 6-7.


Rejection criteria: 

Room temperature specimens unacceptable.

Additional information: 

Patients with hereditary forms of porphyria usually will present with profound elevations of this analyte (>5-fold) during acute episodes. Moderate elevations (<3-fold) are more often due to medications or environmental factors.
