SPECIMEN COLLECTION
Specimen type: 

24-hour urine


Preferred collection container: 
Specimen required: 

5 mL aliquot of urine; minimum 1 mL.


Special notes: 

Urine with preservatives is not acceptable. Mix well. Estimate total collection volume from 24-hour urine container. Remove required aliquot. Record total volume on both aliquot tube and request slip (if applicable).



SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Transport temperature: 

Refrigerated.


Specimen stability: 

Refrigerated: 7 days. Frozen: 1 month.


Rejection criteria: 

Urine containing preservatives is not acceptable.

Interpretation guide: 

Normal: < 150 mg/24 hours 
High: 150-500 mg/24 hours 
Very High: >500 mg/24 hours 
Nephrotic: >3000 mg/24 hours

Clinical significance: 

Proteinuria, mainly glomerular, is often a manifestation of primary renal disease, although transient proteinuria may occur with fevers, thyroid disorders, and in heart disease.
