SPECIMEN COLLECTION
Specimen type: 

Whole Blood


Preferred collection container: 
Alternate collection container: 
4 mL grey-top (Na fluoride/K oxalate) tube
3 mL lavender-top (K2 EDTA) tube
Specimen required: 

10 mL whole blood; minimum 1 mL.



SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Processing instructions: 

Do not centrifuge


Transport temperature: 

Refrigerated (preferred). Room temperature or frozen specimen also acceptable.


Specimen stability: 

Room Temperature: 2 weeks. Refrigerated: 2 weeks. Frozen: 30 days (-20ºC).


Rejection criteria: 

Stability limits exceeded.

<10 mcg/dL


Critical values/courtesy alerts: 
Potentially toxic >20 mcg/dL
Additional information: 

Detection limit, blood 5 mcg/dL. Nitroprusside therapy should be monitored with Thiocyanate.
