SPECIMEN COLLECTION
Specimen type: 

Serum.


Preferred collection container: 
Alternate collection container: 
Gold-top (serum separator) microcollection tube
6 mL red-top (plain, non-serum separator) tube
Specimen required: 

1 mL aliquot; minimum 0.5 mL.



SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Processing instructions: 

Allow serum to clot. Centrifuge to separate serum within 2 hours of collection.


Transport temperature: 

Refrigerated.


Specimen stability: 

Room temperature: 3 days. Refrigerated: 21 days at 2-8°C. Frozen: 3 months.


Rejection criteria: 

Specimen will be rejected if stability limits have been exceeded or if specimen is hemolyzed, lipemic, or icteric. Add-ons available only to unopened tube.

Clinical significance: 

HCV assay is an in vitro diagnostic immunoassay for the qualitative determination of immunogluboulin G (IgG) antibodies to hepatitis C virus (HCV) in human serum. The presence of antibodies to HCV indicates that an individual may have been infected with HCV or may be capable of transmitting HCV infection.
