SPECIMEN COLLECTION
Specimen type: 

Random urine.


Preferred collection container: 
Specimen required: 

15 mL aliquot AND 5 mL aliquot of a random urine, as above; minimum 10 mL and 2 mL, respectively.


Special notes: 

First morning specimen is preferred.



SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Processing instructions: 

Do not centrifuge.


Transport temperature: 

Refrigerated or frozen.


Specimen stability: 

Room temperature: 8 hours. 2-8°C: 72 hours. Frozen: 1 month


Rejection criteria: 

Specimen stability exceeded. Less than 6 mL of urine collected.

Clinical significance: 

Urine protein electophoresis evalutes the presence of albumin and globulin fractions in urine to aid in the diagnosis of plasma cell dyscrasias such as Multiple Myeloma, Waldenstrom Macroglobulinemia, or AL Amyloidosis.
