SPECIMEN COLLECTION
Specimen type: 

Amniotic fluid.


Preferred collection container: 
Specimen required: 

Minimum 20 mL amniotic fluid; minimum 15 mL.


Special notes: 

SPECIMEN VIABILITY DECREASES DURING TRANSIT. SEND SPECIMEN TO TESTING LAB FOR VIABILITY DETERMINATION. DO NOT REJECT. Avoid contamination with blood.



SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Transport temperature: 

Room temperature.


Specimen stability: 

Room temperature: 48 hours (see Special Notes). Refrigerated: Not recommended. Frozen: Unacceptable.


Rejection criteria: 

Frozen specimen.



TEST DETAILS
Additional information: 

If the amniotic fluid AFP MoM is greater than or equal to 2.0, additional tests, Acetylcholinesterase and Fetal Hemoglobin, will automatically be added (CPTs 82664, 83033), and performed at an additional charge. This test may be replaced by other Bill Codes, if the complete study cannot be performed, or if the specimen does not yield mitotically active cells for analysis.
