SPECIMEN COLLECTION
Specimen type: 

24-hour urine collection


Preferred collection container: 
Specimen required: 

15 mL aliquot AND 5 mL aliquot of 24-hour urine, as above; minimum 10 mL and 2 mL, respectively.


Special notes: 

Mix well. Estimate total collection volume from 24-hour urine container. Remove required aliquot. Record total volume on both aliquot tube and request slip (if applicable).



SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Processing instructions: 

Do not centrifuge.


Transport temperature: 

Refrigerated (preferred). Room temperature (stable 8 hours) and frozen specimens also acceptable.


Specimen stability: 

Room temperature: 8 hours. Refrigerated (2-8°C): 72 hours. Frozen: 6 months.


Rejection criteria: 

Stability limits exceeded; less than 6 mL of urine received.

Clinical significance: 

Serum and urine immunofixation are primarily used to aid in the detection of monoclonal gammopathies. Monoclonal gammopathies have association with diseases such as multiple myeloma, lymphomas, leukemia, amyloidosis and Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia.
