SPECIMEN COLLECTION
Specimen type: 

Serum


Preferred collection container: 
Specimen required: 

2 mL aliquot of serum; minimum 0.5 mL in metal-free container.


Special notes: 

Draw one dark blue Vacutainer and discard. Draw a second dark blue Vacutainer and submit that specimen.


Patient preparation: 

Patient should refrain from taking vitamins, or mineral or herbal supplements for at least 7 days before specimen collection.



SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Processing instructions: 

Draw one Vacutainer of blood. Allow blood to clot in an upright position for 1 hour. Centrifuge. Pour (do not pipette) the serum into an acid-washed, metal-free, plastic, leakproof container.


Transport temperature: 

Refrigerated.


Specimen stability: 

Room Temperature: 5 days. Refrigerated: 10 days. Frozen: 21 days.
