SPECIMEN COLLECTION

Preferred collection container: 
Specimen required: 

1 mL EDTA plasma; minimum 0.5 mL



SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Processing instructions: 

Centrifuge as soon as possible within 1 hour of collection. Using plastic transfer pipette, immediately separate plasma from cells into clean, plastic,screw-capped vial(s). Freeze plasma immediately.


Transport temperature: 

Frozen.


Specimen stability: 

Frozen: 9 months.


Rejection criteria: 

Specimens collected or transported in glass will be rejected. Gross hemolysis is unacceptable. Gross lipemia is unacceptable.

Clinical significance: 

BNP is increased in congestive heart failure, left ventricular hypertrophy, acute myocardial infarction, coronary angioplasty, and hypertension. Elevations are also observed in pulmonary hypertension (indicating right ventricular dysfunction), acute lung injury, hypervolemic states, chronic renal failure and cirrhosis. Decreasing levels indicate therapeutic response to anti-hypertensive therapy.
