SPECIMEN COLLECTION
Specimen type: 

Whole blood


Preferred collection container: 
Specimen required: 

6 mL whole blood


Special notes: 

Specimen must be labeled with the patient's first and last name, MRN or some other unique identifier (e.g.billing number,NOT date of birth). date of collection and phlebotomist id must be available. Positive patient identification must be assured.



SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Processing instructions: 

Do not centrifuge or aliquot


Transport temperature: 

Preferred specimen: Room temperature (less then 24 hours). If greater than 24 hours specimen should be stored at 2-8°C.


Specimen stability: 

Specimen should be less than 3 days old for testing


Rejection criteria: 

Tube containing gel separator, non-serum separator tube. Incomplete label (see collection notes).

Clinical significance: 

For prenatal patients with red cell antibodies, the father's red cells can be antigen typed for the relevant antigen. If the father has the antigen, the fetus could inherit the antigen and be at risk for HDN.
