SPECIMEN COLLECTION
Specimen type: 

Gynecologic specimens (cervical screening)


Preferred collection container: 
Specimen required: 

ThinPrep vial with rinsed spatula, brush or broom.


Special notes: 

The collection device is rinsed in the PreservCyt but not submitted in the vial.


Patient preparation: 

No vaginal lubricants to be used prior to collection of thin-prep specimen.



SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Processing instructions: 

The ThinPrep vial is labeled with two identifiers (patient name and medical record number). After sampling, the spatula, brush or broom is swished and swirled in the PreservCyt solution. The vial with cellular suspension is submitted to the laboratory. The collection device is not submitted in the vial.


Transport temperature: 

Room temperature.


Rejection criteria: 

Inadequate patient identifiers on specimen, unlabeled specimen, discrepancy between patient specimen and requisition information, improper collection.
