SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Processing instructions: 

Allow serum to clot. Centrifuge to separate serum or plasma within 2 hours of collection.


Transport temperature: 

Refrigerated.


Specimen stability: 

PST and SST: Room temperature: 7 days. Refrigerated: 7 days. Frozen: 2 months.


Rejection criteria: 

Stability limits exceeded.

Clinical significance: 

Serum chloride counterbalances sodium in maintaining electrical neutrality in body fluids. Chloride is significantly involved in maintaining proper hydration and osmotic pressure. Chloride measurements are used in the diagnosis and treatment of electrolyte and metabolic disorders such as cystic fibrosis and diabetic ketoacidosis.
