Serum (preferred) or CSF (acceptable)


Preferred collection container:

Sterile screw-cap tube
6 mL red-top (plain, non-serum separator) tube
Specimen required: 

2 mL serum; minimum 0.5 mL (preferred)


Special notes: 

2 mL CSF (minimum 0.5 mL) in sterile, leak-proof container (acceptable but not preferred specimen). See Specimen Processing Notes.



SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Processing instructions: 

Serum must be separated from whole blood within 48 hours of collection.


Transport temperature: 

Refrigerated.


Specimen stability: 

Room temperature: 72 hours, Refrigerated: 28 days, Frozen: 28 days.


Rejection criteria: 

Turbid. Bacterial contamination.
