SPECIMEN COLLECTION
Specimen type: 

Whole blood drawn from the fetus


Preferred collection container: 
Specimen required: 

EDTA microcollection tube with 250-500 uL of whole blood


Special notes: 

Specimens are collected by percutaneous umbilical cord blood sampling (or cordocentesis) by specialty providers. Place a separate order for a Fetal HCT for Intrauterine Transfusion if a HCT is needed.



SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Processing instructions: 

Deliver to lab immediately for processing.


Transport temperature: 

Room temperature.


Specimen stability: 

Room temperature: 24 hours.


Rejection criteria: 

Clotted, frozen, hemolyzed, underfilled, overfilled, or centrifuged samples. Samples beyond stability limits.

Methodology: 
Electronic resistance detection enhanced by hydrodynamic focusing and flow cytometry

Clinical significance: 

This test measures the platelet count in a given volume of whole blood and is used for intrauterine transfusions. The test is performed on fetal blood specimens obtained during intrauterine sampling.
