NOTE: For donor corneal rim cultures, order Culture, Foreign Body, Aerobic and Anaerobic.
For vitreous/aqueous fluid, order Culture, Body Fuild, Aerobic.
One swab.
Pre-inoculate culture media plate(s).
Check expiration date on transport device or culture media before use. When collecting specimen, take precaution to avoid contamination with normal bacterial flora.
Use skin disinfection procedure as appropriate.
Immediately transport all specimens to the laboratory to optimize bacterial recovery.
Room temperature.
Eswab/Other swab: < 72 hours.
Improperly labeled/identified specimen. Improperly collected specimens. Expired transport device. Grossly contaminated specimens. Delay in transport or transport at the wrong temperature.
No growth.
