SPECIMEN COLLECTION

Serum, EDTA plasma, EDTA whole blood, CSF, or urine

Specimen required: 

1 mL (minimum 0.6 mL) serum, EDTA plasma, EDTA whole blood, urine, or CSF



SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Processing instructions: 

Centrifuge and transfer serum or plasma to clean, plastic capped vial.


Transport temperature: 

Refrigerated.


Specimen stability: 

Whole blood: Room temperature: 48 hours. Refrigerated: 7 days. Frozen: unacceptable. 
All other specimens: Room temperature: 48 hours. Refrigerated: 7 days. Frozen: 30 days.


Rejection criteria: 

Frozen whole blood, heparinized specimens.

Clinical significance: 

This test is used to determine the presence of adenovirus in a patient's specimen. Organisms may be detected by PCR prior to diagnosis by immunological methods. PCR provides more rapid results than other methods, including culture.
