SPECIMEN COLLECTION
Specimen type: 

Bone marrow or whole blood


Alternate collection container: 
Bone marrow culture transport media
Specimen required: 

3 mL (minimum 1 mL) bone marrow in bone marrow transport media or green-top sodium heparin tube OR 5 mL (minimum 3 mL ) whole blood in green-top sodium heparin tube.



SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Transport temperature: 

Room temperature.


Specimen stability: 

Transport immediately after collection. Specimen viability decreases during transit. Send specimen to testing lab for viability determination. Do not freeze. Do not reject.


Rejection criteria: 

Frozen specimens unacceptable

Additional information: 

If results are not possible, the test order may be canceled and replaced with a Cytogenetics Communication.

Clinical significance: 

This test is performed to detect the rearrangements of MLL (KMT2A;11q23) gene by FISH(fluorescence in situ hybridization). MLL rearrangements have been observed in hematologic neoplasms of either lymphoid or myeloid origin.
