HISTAMINE, 24-HOUR URINE

4 mL aliquot of 24-hour urine; minimum 2 mL.
Collect a 24 hour urine specimen with 10 mL of 6N HCl as a preservative.
Avoid direct sunlight. Avoid taking allergy causing drugs, antihistamines, oral corticosteroids, and substances which block H2 receptors for at least 24 hours before specimen collection.
Refrigerated (cold packs).
Room temperature: 48 hours. Refrigerated: 14 days. Frozen: 14 days.

Histamine is a mediator of the allergic response. Histamine release causes itching, flushing, hives, vomiting, syncope, and even shock. In addition, some patients with gastric carcinoids may exhibit high concentrations of histamine.
