Room temperature: 5 days. Refrigerated: 7 days. Frozen: 28 days.


Rejection criteria: 

Serum separator tube (SST®) unacceptable.

Clinical significance: 

placenta converts DHEA-S, produced by the fetal adrenals, to Estriol and other estrogens. Estriol is useful in assessing the fetal adrenals and placenta during pregnancy. More commonly, Estriol is one of the maternal serum biochemical markers used to screen for common chromosomal trisomies, especially Down syndrome.
