2 mL serum (preferred) or plasma; minimum 1 mL.
Centrifuge and transfer serum specimens to clean, plastic, screw-capped vial(s). Please send the original collection container if possible. Aliquot specimens will only be accepted if processed and labeled at the original collection site. Place the specimens for donor testing in a separate transport bag. Attach a Donor Testing label (Stock Clerk number 136296, available from Client Supplies) to the bag and ship refrigerated (cold packs). Room temperature: Stability is 24 hours for unspun serum or plasma and 7 days for spun. Refrigerated: 10 days. Frozen: 28 days.
Grossly lipemic; gross hemolysis; heparinized specimens; specimens collected from infants less than one month old; specimens other than serum or EDTA plasma; heat-treated specimens.

Trypanosoma cruzi is a flagellated, protozoan parasite, which is endemic to regions of South and Central America and Mexico. It is the causative agent of Chagas Disease. Infection is chronic, asymptomatic and untreatable. The Chagas screening assay detects antibodies to T. cruzi and is used to screen blood and tissue donors.
