BACTERIAL/VIRAL BIOMARKER
Geisinger Epic Procedure Code: LAB4887 Geisinger Epic ID: 186352Whole blood
3 mL lavender-top (K2 EDTA) tube collected MUST be properly filled to at least 1.5 mL (half the fill volume of the tube).
The test is indicated for use in pediatric patients (>3 months to <18 years of age) presenting to the emergency department, with suspected acute bacterial or viral infections, who have had symptoms and fever within the last 7 days. The test is currently only offered at Geisinger Medical Center.
Send unspun blood collection immediately to testing laboratory. The blood must be received within 90 minutes of collection.
Room temperature (15-30°C). Transport immediately via pneumatic tube system to the laboratory after collection.
Testing must be performed within 90 minutes of collection if stored at room temperature (15-30°C). Refrigerate the specimen upon arrival into the laboratory. Specimen may be stored at 2-8°C for up to 4 hours.
Specimens stored or transported at incorrect temperature, frozen, stability limits exceeded, improper collection tube used, insufficient volume, improperly labeled/identified specimens (2 identifiers are required). The test is not intended for patients with the following conditions: <3 months or >17 years of age; pregnant women; active inflammatory disease; congenital or acquired immune deficiency; chronic fungal or parasitic infection; infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV); Hepatitis B virus (HBV); Hepatitis C virus (HCV); infection with active tuberculosis (TB); significant trauma or burns in the last 7 days; patients that have undergone major surgery in the last 7 days; or active malignancy.
The test results include measurements of 3 human proteins combined into one risk stratification score. 1. TNF -Related Apoptosis-Inducing Ligand (TRAIL). 2. Interferon Gamma Induced Protein 10 (IP-10). 3. C-Reactive Protein. (CRP)
The CPT codes provided by GML are based on AMA guidelines and are for informational purposes only.

This test measures three (host) proteins: TRAIL, IP-10, and CRP) found in whole blood samples. Test results are intended for use in conjunction with clinical assessments and other laboratory findings as an aid to differentiate bacterial from viral infections.
