Geisinger Epic Procedure Code: LAB3677 Geisinger Epic ID: 121991Vaginal swab (provider or in clinic self-collect)
Vaginal specimen collected in an Aptima Multitest Swab Specimen Collection Kit (provider or in clinic self-collect).
Check expiration date on transport device before use. For the Aptima® Multitest Swab Specimen Collection Kit, use pink-shafted swab only. NOTE: The Aptima® Multitest Swab Specimen Collection Kit is the only collection kit approved for vaginal specimens. Testing cannot be performed from any other Aptima® collection kits. Testing will not be performed on females less than 14 years of age. If testing is needed on this age group, collect a vaginal Eswab specimen and order a Culture, Genital Aerobic (LAB2136).
Room temperature (15-30°C). Refrigerated (2-8°C) is also acceptable.
Swab specimens in transport tubes can be stored at 2°C to 30°C for up to 30 days. If longer storage is needed, specimens may be stored at -20 to -70°C for an additional 60 days.
Improperly labels/identified specimens. Expired collection/transport device. Improper transport device. Improper specimen type, females less than 14 years of age.

Molecular target amplification and detection of Bacterial Vaginosis, Candida species group, Candida glabrata, and Trichomonas vaginalis. Targets reported as Candida species (spp.) Result Group include C. albicans, C. tropicalis, C. parapsilosis, and C. dubliniensis . Individual targets include Candida glabrata and Trichomonas vaginalis. Targets reported as the Bacterial Vaginosis Result Group include Lactobacillus gasseri, Lactobacillus crispatus, Lactobacillus jenserii, Gardnerella vaginalis, and Atopobium vaginae.

The three main categories of vaginitis are bacterial vaginosis, (BV), yeast vaginitis (candidiasis) and T. vaginalis vaginitis (trichomoniasis). This test will detect all three from a single specimen. Clinical correlation is needed with the detection of bacterial vaginosis, Candida species group, and Candida glabrata since these may be associated with colonization.
