A positive beta 2 glycoprotein antibody can be used in conjunction with clinical findings and other laboratory tests to aid in the diagnosis of certain autoimmune thrombotic disorders such as those secondary to systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) or related antiphospholipid syndrome. Anticardiolipin/beta-2 glycoprotein antibodies must be detected on 2 or more occasions at least 12 weeks apart to fulfill the laboratory diagnostic criteria for Antiphospholipid Syndrome.
