TEST DETAILS
Interpretation guide:
Parvovirus B19 Ab (IgG)<0.9
Parvovirus B19 Ab (IgM)<0.9

Interpretive Criteria

<0.9Negative
0.9-1.1Equivocal
>1.1Positive

Positive: Indicative of exposure to Parvovirus B19 Negative: No antibody detected. This individual may be susceptible to Parvovirus B19 infection. Equivocal: These results are too close to the cutoff values to interpret. A second sample should be drawn in two weeks, if clinically indicated. Specific IgG persists for years, and provides lifetime immunity. A majority of adults show evidence of past infection. If definitive diagnosis of acute Parvovirus infection is desired, a Parvovirus B19 IgM should be obtained. Due to the poor humoral immune response in the immunocompromised, the chronically anemic, and the fetus, both antibody and DNA PCR tests are recommended for definitive diagnosis of Parvovirus B19 infection in these patients.

Methodology:
Enzyme Immunoassay (EIA)
Synonyms:

PARGM, PARVOVIRUS ANTIBODIES B19 IGG, IGM, B19 PANEL, Quest test code 8946

Clinical significance:

Parvovirus B19 is also known as "Fifth Disease." It affects primarily children and causes a rash on the face, trunk, and limbs. Joint pain and swelling is more common in adults. Although one-fifth of those affected have only mild disease, patients with sickle cell anemia or similar types of chronic anemia can suffer from acute anemia. Infection during pregnancy can lead to complications.
