2 mL aliquot of serum or plasma; minimum 0.2 mL.
Collect just prior to next dose.
Allow serum to clot. Centrifuge to separate serum or plasma within 2 hours of collection.
Refrigerated (preferred) or frozen.
Refrigerated: 1 week. Frozen: 60 days.
Stability limits exceeded.
Therapeutic range: 10-20 mcg/mL.
Significant interference with this procedure may occur in patients with antibodies induced during treatment with mouse monoclonal antibodies.

Theophylline is used in the treatment of bronchial asthma as well as the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and episodes of prolonged apnea in preterm infants. Theophylline levels are monitored to assure adequate therapeutic levels are achieved and to avoid toxicity.
