Specimen type: 

Plasma or serum


Specimen required: 

2 mL of serum or plasma; minimum 0.2 mL.



SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Processing instructions: 

Allow serum to clot. Centrifuge to separate serum or plasma within 2 hours of collection.


Transport temperature: 

Refrigerated (preferred) or room temperature.


Specimen stability: 

Room temperature: 3 months. Refrigerated: 8 months.


Rejection criteria: 

Stability limits exceeded.

Clinical significance: 

Haptoglobin is an acute phase reactant, and elevated concentrations are observed with inflammatory diseases. Decreased levels are found in hemolytic disease, hepatocellular disease, and mononucleosis.
