Sodium in whole blood can rapidly assess the hydration state of the patient and help diagnose several diseases that affect water and electrolyte imbalance. Addison's disease, diabetes insipidus, aldosteronism, and inappropriate antidiuretic hormone (ADH) secretion typically require electrolyte monitoring.
