SPECIMEN COLLECTION
Specimen type: 

Random urine


Preferred collection container: 
Specimen required: 

7 mL random urine in a metal-free, acid-washed container; minimum 5 mL.


Special notes: 

For clinical monitoring, collect second voided a.m. urine. For industrial monitoring, collect urine preshift. 
Wash hands before sample collection. Wipe hands dry with lint-free paper towels. Do not use recycled paper towels. 
Collect 7 mL of the second morning urine in an acid-washed, metal-free (polypropylene or polyethylene), leakproof container. Minimum: 5 mL. Use powderless gloves to pour sample into acid-washed transport container, if needed.


Patient preparation: 

Patient should refrain from eating predatory fish such as swordfish, tuna, and shark at least 3 days before specimen collection.



SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Transport temperature: 

Refrigerated.


Specimen stability: 

Room Temperature: 2 days. Refrigerated: 5 days. Frozen: 2 weeks.


Rejection criteria: 

Stability limits exceeded.



TEST DETAILS
Reference interval: 

2nd voided a.m. urine for nonexposed adults: 4 ug/g Creatinine or less 
Biological Exposure Index (preshift): 35 ug/g Creatinine or less.
