SPECIMEN COLLECTION
Specimen type: 

Serum (preferred) or plasma.


Preferred collection container: 
Alternate collection container: 
3 mL green/black top lithium heparin tube
3 mL lavender-top (K2 EDTA) tube
4 mL green/green-top (sodium heparin) tube
Specimen required: 

3 mL aliquot of serum or plasma; minimum 1 mL.



SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Processing instructions: 

Centrifuge and immediately separate serum or plasma specimens from the cells into clean, plastic, screw-capped vial(s). Transport refrigerated (cold packs).


Transport temperature: 

Refrigerated (preferred) or frozen.


Specimen stability: 

Room Temperature: 2 days. Refrigerated: 4 days. Frozen: 1 month.


Rejection criteria: 

Stability limits exceeded. Separator tubes are not acceptable.

Amiodarone:
Therapeutic range: 1.5-2.5 mcg/mL 
Desmethylamiodarone:
Therapeutic range: 1.5-2.5 mcg/mL
Toxic: >2.5 mcg/mL
Toxic effects have been observed at levels as low as 2.0 mcg/mL. 
Detection limits:
Amiodarone 0.3 mcg/mL
Desmethylamiodarone 0.3 mcg/mL
