OXALIC ACID, 24-HOUR URINE WITHOUT CREATININE

10 mL aliquot of 24-hour urine, as above; minimum volume 2 mL.
Mix well. Estimate total collection volume from 24-hour urine container. Remove required aliquot. Record total volume on both aliquot tube and request slip (if applicable).
Patient should refrain from taking excessive amounts of ascorbic acid or oxalate-rich foods (i.e., spinach, coffee, tea, chocolate, rhubarb) for at least 48 hours before collection.
Adjust pH to less than 3.0 before aliquotting for testing. Mix well and aliquot 10 mL.
Refrigerated (preferred). Refrigerated or frozen specimen also acceptable.
Room Temperature: 6 days. Refrigerated: 7 days. Frozen: 4 months.
Stability limits exceeded.
24-Hr Urine: 3.6-38.0 mg/24 hr
Random, Timed (not 24-Hr) Urine: Reference ranges are not available.

Excessive oxalates in the urine may lead to oxalate kidney stones. Hyperoxaluria may be due to a rare inherited metabolic disorder in which the body produces excess of the salt oxalate, leading to stone formation.
