SPECIMEN COLLECTION

Whole blood


Preferred collection container: 
Specimen required: 

2 mL whole blood; minimum 0.5 mL protected from light.


Special notes: 

Use a lead-free tube, if a blood lead test is also requested. Foil wrap samples to avoid photodegradation.



SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Processing instructions: 

Tube must be protected from light.


Transport temperature: 

Refrigerated.


Specimen stability: 

Room Temperature: 4 days. Refrigerated: 10 days. Frozen: Unacceptable.


Rejection criteria: 

Stability limits exceeded. Not protected from light. Frozen specimen.

Aluminum and anemia of chronic disease may cause elevated results.
