SPECIMEN COLLECTION
Specimen type: 

Plasma


Preferred collection container: 
Specimen required: 

2 mL plasma; minimum 0.5 mL.


Special notes: 

Place specimen on ice, or centrifuge and separate plasma from cells.


Patient preparation: 

8-hour fasting is required.



SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Processing instructions: 

Centrifuge to separate plasma within 2 hours of collection.


Transport temperature: 

Refrigerated (preferred) or room temperature.


Specimen stability: 

3 days (spun and unspun).


Rejection criteria: 

Stability limits exceeded.



TEST DETAILS
Interpretation guide: 

Based on guidelines from American Diabetes Association: 
Fasting glucose < 100 mg/dL ~ normal
100 mg/dL <= fasting glucose < 126 mg/dL ~ pre-diabetes 
fasting glucose >= 126 mg/dL ~ diabetes, diagnosis requires two abnormal diabetes diagnostic test results.


Critical values/courtesy alerts: 
Below 45 mg/dL, 500 mg/dL or above.

Clinical significance:
