Specimen required: 

0.5 mL aliquot of serum; minimum 0.1 mL.



SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Processing instructions: 

Centrifuge and transfer serum specimens to clean, plastic, screw-capped vial(s). Transport at room temperature.


Transport temperature: 

Room temperature (preferred). Refrigerated or frozen specimen also acceptable.


Specimen stability: 

Room temperature: 7 days . Refrigerated: 14 days. Frozen: 30 days.


Rejection criteria: 

Stability limits exceeded.

Clinical significance: 

HHV-6 is a distinct herpes virus that typically causes a self-limiting illness in patients who are not immunocompromised. In some patients, especially if immumocompromised, HHV-6 can cause febrile convulsions in infants, encephalitis mononucleosis-like symptoms, and hepatitis.
